Counselling Psychologist

About Shivank Baisoya

My journey towards becoming a psychologist started with a different aspiration in my 12th grade. At that time, my goal was to become a doctor. The medical field fascinated me, and I was driven by a deep desire to help people and make a significant impact on their lives. I dedicated myself to this dream, immersing myself in studies and preparation to pursue a career in medicine. However, life often has its own plans, and it was during my college years that I discovered my true passion for psychology.

As I began my undergraduate studies, I enrolled in a few psychology courses out of curiosity. These classes opened a new world for me, one that was profoundly intriguing and intellectually stimulating. I was captivated by the complexities of human behavior, emotions, and the workings of the mind. The more I learned, the more I realized how deeply interconnected our mental health is with our overall well-being. This growing interest in psychology led me to take more courses in the subject, gradually shifting my focus from medicine to psychology.

The turning point came when I pursued my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. This period was transformative, both academically and personally. The rigorous coursework, combined with practical experiences, provided me with a comprehensive understanding of various psychological theories and therapeutic techniques. I was particularly drawn to subjects like mindfulness techniques, couple therapy, and adolescence counseling. These areas not only fascinated me but also allowed me to see the profound impact psychological interventions could have on individuals and relationships.

Throughout my Master’s program, I engaged in self-reflection and personal growth, uncovering many insights about myself that I had never realized before. This deepened my appreciation for the field of psychology and its potential to facilitate personal transformation. I saw firsthand how therapeutic techniques could help individuals overcome challenges, improve their mental health, and lead more fulfilling lives. This realization was a pivotal moment for me, solidifying my commitment to becoming a psychologist.

My passion for psychology was further fueled by the practical applications of what I was learning. During internships and practical sessions, I had the opportunity to work with diverse groups of people, applying therapeutic techniques and witnessing the positive changes they brought about. These experiences reinforced my belief in the power of psychology to heal and empower individuals.

Choosing to become a psychologist was not just a career decision; it was a calling that aligned with my values and aspirations. The journey from aspiring to be a doctor to becoming a psychologist has been one of profound personal growth and discovery. It has allowed me to combine my desire to help others with my passion for understanding the human mind, ultimately guiding me towards a fulfilling and impactful career in psychology.

Approach to Therapy:

My approach to therapy is highly individualized, recognizing that each client brings a unique set of experiences, challenges, and goals to the therapeutic process. The journey begins with a thorough understanding of the client’s needs through initial observation and comprehensive history taking. This phase is crucial as it allows me to gather essential information about the client’s background, presenting issues, and their expectations from therapy. Building rapport is a foundational step in this process. Establishing a trusting and respectful relationship is key to creating a safe space where clients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings openly.

Once a strong therapeutic alliance is established, I move on to developing a tailored intervention plan. This plan is crafted based on the insights gained from the initial assessment and is designed to address the specific needs and goals of the client. The intervention plan is not static; it is a dynamic framework that evolves as therapy progresses. It includes selecting appropriate therapeutic techniques and approaches that align with the client’s preferences and therapeutic goals. For instance, I may incorporate elements from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), depending on what is most suitable for the client.

Psychoeducation is an integral part of my approach. I believe that empowering clients with knowledge about their conditions, therapeutic techniques, and coping strategies is essential for fostering self-awareness and self-efficacy. Through psychoeducation, clients gain a better understanding of their thought patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors, which in turn helps them to actively participate in their healing process.

The intervention plan is then applied in a structured manner. During this phase, I continuously monitor the client’s progress and gather feedback to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. Regular check-ins and open communication allow me to make real-time adjustments to the plan as needed. If a particular strategy is not yielding the desired results, I explore alternative approaches and modify the plan accordingly. This flexibility ensures that the therapy remains responsive to the client’s evolving needs and circumstances.

My ultimate goal is to help clients achieve meaningful and lasting changes that resolve their issues and improve their overall well-being. Once the client’s goals are met and significant progress is made, we move towards the termination phase. In this phase, I provide follow-up recommendations and strategies to help clients maintain the progress they have achieved. I also encourage periodic follow-up sessions to ensure that they continue to thrive and manage any potential challenges effectively.

This personalized and adaptive approach to therapy is designed to support clients at every step of their journey, helping them to navigate their challenges and achieve their desired outcomes in a supportive and compassionate environment.

What SHIVANK’s Client Say

As someone who has observed Shivank’s professional and personal growth from the very beginning of his Master’s degree, it was truly rewarding to see him conduct such an insightful workshop. His explaining style stands out, as it allows not only professionals in the field to grasp the content, but also enables those without a background in psychology to gain clear conceptual understanding. Given that this was his first ever workshop, I think he did a commendable job and I am sure he will only improve at it as time progresses. – Nehal

Shivank’s session was not just informative but was easy to understand and remember. The examples were the most fun to hear and captivating. It says a lot about the session when a 14 year old, overhearing the interesting story stops to listen to the whole session and enjoys it and talks about it post the session.

Given the fact that I am not from the psychology background, I can say that Shivank was able to help me gain conceptual clarity and build an elementary understanding of trauma & its generational impact, especially by the way of the examples provided. I’m glad that I attended the workshop.
